Lady Bulldogs Fall Short 50-51 To Hampton

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—Junior forward Jephany Brown knocked down three straight free-throws with 0:03 seconds left to lift Hampton to a 50-51 victory over South Carolina State Monday (Feb.6) at Smith-Hammond-Memorial Center.

"It was a tough loss for us," said head coach Doug Robertson, Jr. "It's hard to win any game when you have 24 turnovers.  We have to regroup and turn our focus to the next game."

Junior forward Brittany Drumgoole led the Lady Bulldogs with a game-high 17 points, while shooting 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Graduate guard Bryeasha Blair finished with 10 points and six rebounds and junior guard/forward Mallory Stone chipped in eight points and five rebounds in the loss.

The game was nip-and-tuck throughout with nine ties and seven lead changes.

Hampton's Georgianna Gilbeaux tossed in a pair of free-throws to jump out to a five-point lead, 16-11 at the 7:11 mark in the second quarter. Freshman forward Alexis Scott hit a pair from the charity stripe, followed by a layup by Blair with 1:39 left before intermission to give South Carolina State a four-point lead, 22-18.

Blair opened the scoring drive for South Carolina State nailing a three pointer to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead six, 25-18 at the 9:40 mark in the third quarter. Hampton responded sparking an 14-7 run off a layup by K'lynn Willis to cut the lead to one, 33-32 to close out the quarter.

Monnaz Finney-Smith's jumper push the Lady Pirates lead to six, 46-40, with 5:28 remaining in regulation. Drumgoole's back-to-back three pointers, followed by two free-throws by Stone gave SC State the lead 48-46 with 2:08 remaining.

Drumgoole tossed in two of her three free-throws down the stretch to give SC State 50-48 lead with 0:05 seconds remaining.  A costly foul which resulted in three-straight free-throws by Brown sealed the 51-50 victory for Hampton with 0:03 seconds left.

South Carolina State falls to 5-16 overall, 2-8 in the MEAC, while Hampton improves to 14-9 overall, 8-2 in the league. Willis led Hampton with a team-high16 points in the win.

Freshman forward Alexis Scott grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for South Carolina State.

SC State returns to action on Saturday (Feb.11) on the road when they take on North Carolina Central in Durham, NC. Tipoff is 2p.m., with the men following in a 4 p.m. start.
