Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Despite playing in front of a home crowd of 329 excited fans, the South Carolina State women's volleyball team dropped its home opener 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-9) to Charleston Southern on Tuesday night at Dukes Gymnasium.
After getting warmed up in the first set, the Lady Bulldogs put up a serious fight in set 2. The Buccaneers (1-3) started the set on a 4-1 run, but SC State settled down and took a 7-6 lead on a CSU attack error. Later on, the Lady Bulldogs led by three, 17-14, after two Buccaneer attack errors and a kill by sophomore Jamie Jacobs. Sophomore Briana Dafney forced the 12
th tie of the game (22-22) with a kill, but CSU outscored SC State 3-1 the rest of the way to take the set.
Brooke Monssen had match-highs of 14 kills and three block assists to lead Charleston Southern.
Dafney led the Lady Bulldogs with eight kills. Junior
Marcella Chestnut added six kills and four digs. Sophomore
Alexis Moses finished with a match-high nine digs.
SC State travels to Princess Anne, Md. to play in the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Courtyard Classic. The Lady Bulldogs play Norfolk State and Rider University on Friday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, SC State takes on host UMES at 11 a.m.
