Box Score 2 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The South Carolina State women's volleyball team wrapped up play in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Classic on Saturday after taking on Mississippi Valley State and Cal State Fullerton at Maclellan Gym.
SC State (0-4) fell 3-2 (25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11) to MVSU in its first five-set match since October 2014 then dropped the final match of the tournament 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-16) to CSF.
The first match of the day was hard fought from the beginning. The Lady Bulldogs led 12-9 after a kill by freshman
Fabiola Plaza. Mississippi Valley State then went on a 4-0 run to take a lead it would hold on to for the remainder of the set.
SC State came out hot in the second set, taking a quick 15-9 lead. The Devilettes rallied, however, and tied the set at 17-all on a kill by Cynthia Richardson. SC State's Annisa Brayboy forced the fifth tie of the set (24-all), but a MVSU kill and a Lady Bulldog attack error gave the Devilettes their second straight set win.
In the third set, SC State went on a 6-0 run to start the set. The Lady Bulldogs stayed ahead until a Devilette kill tied the set at 20-20. SC State won the set 25-23 on an attack error by MVSU, giving the Lady Bulldogs their first set win of the short season.
Set 4 was close the entire way, but SC State held on for the 25-23 victory to tie the match at 2-2. MVSU took the lead to start the deciding set and led 6-2 after a Lady Bulldog attack error. SC State rallied and tied the set at 8-all on a service ace by sophomore Briana Dafney. Closing out the set, the Devilletes had two straight kills and won the match on another Lady Bulldog attack error.
Dafney recorded a career-high 23 kills and added seven digs, six block assists and three aces. Plaza and
Alexis Moses also had career performances with 37 assists and 23 digs, respectively.
Marcella Chestnut also had a double-digit outing with 18 digs.
Cal State Fullerton swept SC State in straight sets to conclude the Lady Bulldogs' tournament play. Chestnut had team-highs of 10 digs and six kills in the match, while Plaza had a team-best 12 assists.
SC State hosts Charleston Southern at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in its home opener.
