Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Virginia Military Institute women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over South Carolina State on Friday afternoon at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
 
The match was physical and competitive from the start. VMI (1-0) took seven first-half shots, while the Lady Bulldogs (0-1) took five. The Keydets went into halftime with a 1-0 lead after Lizzy Cotter scored an unassisted goal at the 18:59 mark to halt SC State's four-year streak of winning its season openers.
 
The tough play continued in the second half. In the 82^nd minute, it seemed as if the Lady Bulldogs would get on the board when a shot by Justina Jarema found the back of the net, but SC State was offsides, which negated the goal.
 
A shot by Jamey Thomas that went wide with four minutes remaining was SC State's last attempt to score before time expired.
 
Jarema took a team-high four shots, all on goal, while Mary Pierce and Marissa Horton each took one shot on goal. Despite falling to 0-1 on the season, goalkeeper Katelyn Kern had a match-high 10 saves.
 
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host UNC Wilmington.
