Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Virginia Military Institute women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over South Carolina State on Friday afternoon at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
The match was physical and competitive from the start. VMI (1-0) took seven first-half shots, while the Lady Bulldogs (0-1) took five. The Keydets went into halftime with a 1-0 lead after Lizzy Cotter scored an unassisted goal at the 18:59 mark to halt SC State's four-year streak of winning its season openers.
The tough play continued in the second half. In the 82
nd minute, it seemed as if the Lady Bulldogs would get on the board when a shot by
Justina Jarema found the back of the net, but SC State was offsides, which negated the goal.
A shot by
Jamey Thomas that went wide with four minutes remaining was SC State's last attempt to score before time expired.
Jarema took a team-high four shots, all on goal, while
Mary Pierce and
Marissa Horton each took one shot on goal. Despite falling to 0-1 on the season, goalkeeper
Katelyn Kern had a match-high 10 saves.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host UNC Wilmington.
