Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amber Howard had a game- and season-high 17 points to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 65-63 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win at Howard University on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium.
Amber Howard's clutch 3-pointer with 2:04 left in the game gave SC State (11-13, 7-7 MEAC) its first lead of the night (60-59). The Lady Bison (5-21, 3-10 MEAC) regained the lead on a jumper by Erin Blaine at the 1:38 mark, but Howard connected on a pair of free throws two seconds later after being fouled to tie the game at 61-all. Blaine then wasted no time in driving in for a layup on the other end to give the Lady Bison a 63-62 lead.
Toni Grier hit a layup with 55 seconds left and the second of two free throws by Ashleigh Outler ended the scoring and gave SC State its 11th win of the season.
The Lady Bison led for over three and a half quarters, but the Lady Bulldogs were never out of reach as Howard never led by more than nine points.
Imani Bailey had a team-high 15 points for the Lady Bison, while Victoria Gonzales and Jasmine Hill had 13 points each. Te'Shya Heslip aslo scored in double figures with 10 points. Gonzales led the defense with team-highs in rebounds (11) and blocks (3).
Outler finished with 11 points and Jasmine Coleman grabbed a game-high 13 boards.
SC State makes the short trip to Savannah, Ga. on Saturday to take on Savannah State at 4 p.m.
