Bulldogs Host Hornets In MEAC Showdown Saturday

ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's basketball team is looking for their fourth-straight league win on Saturday (Jan. 16) when they host the visiting Hornets of Delaware State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader. Tipoff is 2 p.m. for the women, with the men following immediately afterwards in a 4 p.m. start time. 
 
Fans who cannot attend the game in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, can listen to the MEAC showdown on 93.7 FM the People's Station and the official station of SC State Athletics, with Paul Harris on the air for the play-by-play. There will be no video or live stats available.

The MATCHUP: SC State (8-10 overall, 3-1 MEAC) is coming off back-to-back MEAC wins over NC Central (91-75) and rival N.C. A&T State (92-85) on last week. The Bulldog is currently tied for 2nd place in the league standings. Three Bulldogs are in double-figures with Eaves leading with way with 15.2 points, and sophomore guard Ed Stephens's chips in 14.4.  Senior guard/forward Gabriel McCray tosses in 11.8 points, while grabbing 4.8 rebounds. All-MEAC Preseason forward/center Darryl Palmer is the leader on the boards with 5.6 and scoring 7.9 per game. SC State is grabbing almost 32.5 rebounds a game, while forcing over 13.5 turnovers. 
 
Delaware State (1-14 overall, 0-1 MEAC) has gotten off to a rough start this season, while their record is no indication on how talented this team is the Hornets are looking for their first league win of the season against the Bulldogs. Devin Morgan is the leader for DSU with 10.1 ppg, while teammate DeAndre Haywood is second with 9.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per outing. 
 
BULLDOG NOTE: Sophomore guard Ed Stephens was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Player of the Week, the conference announced. Stephens shot 58-percent (7-of-12) from the floor and 80-percent (4-of-5) at the free-throw line in a 91-75 victory over North Carolina Central. Also, he tallied 23 points, including five 3-pointers, with two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 26 minutes of play.
