Kirby Anderson had a double-double of 13 kills (match-high) and 11 digs, while senior
Marissa Lawrence and freshman
Brianna Dafney tallied 10 kills each, but it was not enough as the USC Upstate women's volleyball team defeated SC State 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 25-19, 29-27) on Tuesday night at Dukes Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-4) outplayed the Spartans (8-0) in several statistical categories, including kills (54-53), hitting percentage (.238-.234), assists (49-47) and team blocks (12.5-5.0), but were done in by a few untimely errors.
Set 1 was close from beginning to end. Tied at 23-all, SC State capitalized on a Spartan attack error to go up 24-23. An SC State service error let Upstate get back in it and the Spartans got the next two points to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, SC State took a 15-11 lead after two straight attack errors by Upstate. Back-to-back kills by Anderson and
Ashante Finnie gave the Lady Bulldogs a 17-11 advantage. They outscored the Spartans 8-7 the rest of the way to take the set.
The third set was very competitive, with no team leading by more than six points at any time during the set.
The Lady Bulldogs took a fast 2-0 lead to start the fourth and final set. Upstate rallied back to take a 4-2 lead and stayed ahead until a Spartan attack error tied the set at 15-all. The Lady Bulldogs forced four more ties along the way, but Upstate broke the final tie and sealed the win after a SC State setting error and a service ace by Madison Haake.
For the Lady Bulldogs, senior
Melanie Williams had a match-high 44 assists and added five digs and four block assists. Sophomores
Ashante Finnie and
Kiana Stone recorded nine kills apiece.
SC State travels to Asheville, N.C. to participate in the UNC Asheville Tournament this weekend. The Lady Bulldogs play The Citadel at 5 p.m. on Friday and New Orleans and UNC Asheville at 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
