Box Score 3 ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina State women's volleyball team finished fourth in the High Point University Classic sponsored by the Hampton Inn this past weekend.
On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs (0-3) fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-16) to host High Point and 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-18) to Georgia State on Friday. On Saturday, SC State suffered a 3-1 (26-24, 25-16, 29-31, 25-18) loss to Loyola (Md.).
"I thought we did some really nice things in our first matches of the season," head coach
Valerie Jones said. "We stayed aggressive throughout all of our matches and, as we get more game experience, we will definitely cut down on unforced errors."
Against High Point, freshman
Brianna Dafney tallied eight kills and one ace. Sophomore
Kirby Anderson, who earned all-tournament honors, had four blocks and seven digs, while senior
Melanie Williams had a match-high 18 assists.
In the Georgia State match, Williams had a double-double of 17 assists and 11 digs. In the four-set loss to Loyola, three Lady Bulldogs had double-digit kills. Anderson had a career-high 17 kills and added nine digs, while Dafney and sophomore
Kiana Stone had career-highs of 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Dafney also had five digs and three aces.
The Lady Bulldogs host USC Upstate on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Dukes Gymnasium.
