ORANGEBURG,SC— South Carolina State University recognized student-athletes in 14 sports, sports medicine, equipment managers and marketing interns at its annual Athletic Banquet at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on Tuesday evening.
Basketball players Kourtney Williams and Edward Stephens were named the Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year. Williams, a two-time All-MEAC second-team performer, scored 1,116 points in her four-year career, while Stephens was the Bulldogs' leading scorer, a six-time MEAC Rookie of the Week and maintained over more than a 3.0 GPA.
Rising senior defensive end Javon Hargrave was presented with the Box-to-Row National Defensive Player of the Year by Donal Ware. Hargrave, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, was third in the nation in sacks in 2014 and broke a school record with six sacks in a win over Bethune-Cookman.
The highlight of the night was a special presentation by Director of Athletics Paul A. Bryant to rising senior linebacker Reggie Owens for his heroic act in saving the lives of three children, involved in a motor vehicle accident near Savannah, Georgia while traveling home during Easter break.
The banquet normally closes out the athletic year for all athletic teams, but this year the softball team, and men's and women's tennis will be completely over the next few weeks.
