Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – The South Carolina State women's volleyball notched its first win of the season in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 29-27) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over North Carolina Central University on Friday night at the L.T. Walker Complex.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-10, 1-2 MEAC) cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match after dominating the first two sets. In each of the first two sets, N.C. Central (2-16, 1-1 MEAC) tried to keep things close early, but SC State shut down the Lady Eagles' efforts, leading by as many as 14 points in the first set.
The third and final set was much closer from beginning to end. SC State scored the first two points on a service ace by
Melanie Williams and a kill by
Kiana Stone. The Lady Bulldogs extended the lead to 10-6 on a N.C. Central attack error, but quickly found themselves tied at 11-all after a 5-1 Lady Eagle run. Both teams exchanged points until SC State took a three point lead, 20-17, after a kill by
Marissa Lawrence. N.C. Central rallied back, but lost the set after a kill by Lawrence and a solo block by Stone for the 29-27 win.
Lawrence led SC State with 13 kills and added six digs.
Ashante Finnie had eight kills and a match-high 14 digs, while
Kirby Anderson had six kills, 11 digs and 4.5 blocks. Williams tallied a match-high 30 assists and added 11 digs, one total block and an ace.
The Lady Bulldogs continue their road trip in the Tar Heel State when the play at North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.
