Bulldogs Seek To Avenge Early Season Loss To Hornets

ORANGEBURG, SC
—The South Carolina State Bulldogs seek to avenge an early season loss to the visiting Hornets of Delaware State when they meet Saturday (Jan.31) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Tipoff for the women's contest is 4 p.m., with the men following immediately afterwards.

SERIES MEETING: The Hornets and Bulldogs are meeting for the second time in two weeks and for the 84th time in the series. Delaware State won this season's first meeting 60-49 on Jan. 17 in Dover. Senior forward Kendall Gray dominated the game with 16 points and a career-high 23 rebounds in the win.

LAST TIMEOUT: The Bulldogs knocked off a struggling Hampton Pirate team, 65-57, in Orangeburg.  SC State had three players in double figures with junior guard/forward Gabe McCray and sophomore guard Jalen White with 14 each. Freshman guard Edward Stephens who was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, Delaware State is coming off a tough, 55-54, loss to MEAC leader North Carolina Central last Monday. The Hornets came up short when Amere May missed two-of-three free throws with 0.4 seconds left to play, allowing the Eagles to escape with the win

IN THE MEAC: South Carolina State is in 6th place in the conference standings with a 5-3 MEAC, 7-15 overall record. The Bulldogs were picked to finish 12th in the preseason MEAC poll.  Delaware State currently is tied for 4th place with Howard with a 4-2 conference record and 10-10 overall standing.

BULLDOG BITE: The Bulldogs also tally nearly seven steals per game while forcing almost 13 turnovers. Freshman guard Edward Stephens leads the way in scoring with 11.4 points, while sophomore guard Greg Mortimer chips 8.2 ppg and Karon Wright 8.1. Junior forward Darryl is the leader on the board with 7.0 rebounds, 7.2 points and 2.2 blocks per game.

HORNET STING: The Hornets are led by All-MEAC forward Kendall Gray with 11.6 ppg and 12.8 rpg, while senior Amere May is the scoring threat for DSU with 17.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per outing. Senior forward Tyshawn Bell is the key to Delaware State's team with 9.7 points and 4.8 rebounds, while sophomore guard DeAndre Haywood chips in 8.0 points.

SC State returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 4) against St. Andrews College in a non-conference matchup at Smith –Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
