SC State Falls Short To Eastern Kentucky 63-52

Box Score RICHMOND, KY—Junior forward Darryl Palmer tossed in a team-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough as SC State fell short, 63-52, to Eastern Kentucky Saturday (Jan. 3) at McBrayer Arena.

South Carolina State falls to 4-12 overall, 2-0 in the MEAC, while EKU improves to 8-5 on the season.

The Colonels had three players in double-figures with Eric Stutz and Denzel Richardson each tossing in a game-high 18 points each, while teammate Corey Walden added 11 in the win.

Despite, being down players due to injury the Bulldogs dominated the rebounding category over EKU 36-20 as well as controlling the tempo in the paint outscoring the home team 36-22 on the night.

SC State converted 17-2 on 2nd chance points, while getting 17 unanswered points from the bench. Sophomore guard Greg Mortimer who missed the last game to injury added seven points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of play for the Bulldogs.

Freshman guard Edward Stephens chipped in eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Both teams shot a season low from the field with SC State shooting 39.6% (21-of-53) and EKU 48.9 % (22-of-45).

Turnovers (17-SC State, 13 EKU) seemed to be the deciding factor down the stretch for South Carolina State, while EKU shot 81.8% (9-of-11) from the charity stripe and 38.5 % (10-of-26) from behind the arc.

South Carolina State returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 10) when the Bulldogs open up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play against last year's league champions NC Central in Durham, NC. Tipoff is 4 p.m.
