Stephens Lift Bulldogs In Overtime Victory Over Hawks

Box Score PRINCESS ANNE, MD—Freshman guard Edward Stephens nailed a three-pointer with  2.3 seconds remaining in overtime to give South Carolina State a,73-72, victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore Monday (Jan.19) at William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Stephens finished with a game-high 26 points, while sophomore guard Greg Mortimer added 21 in the Bulldogs thrilling overtime victory. The win was the first creditable road victory for SC State  in five years since the 2010 season, when the Bulldogs knocked off top-ranked and undefeated Morgan State 71-68 (2-15-10) in Baltimore, MD on ESPNU.

"It was a great road win for our team tonight," said SC State head coach Murray Garvin. "Our guys played tough and when things got rough they didn't back down. I couldn't ask for a better outcome from my team against a very good and well coached UMES team."

UMES built their largest lead of the game 11, 59-48 off a pair of free-throws by Ishaq Pitt with 8:13 remaining in regulation. SC State sparked an 11-2 run of a pair of layups by Stephens and Mortimer to regain the lead 62-61 with 1:01 left.

All-MEAC forward and the Hawks leading scorer Michael Myers tossed in a pair of free-throws to tie the game and force overtime. The Bulldog defense held Myers to a season low three rebounds and 13 points on the night.

In overtime UMES jumped out to a quick four point advantage, 70-66, off a layup by Pitt with 2:19 remaining. Stephens tossed in a pair of free-throws, followed by a driving layup by junior forward Darryl Palmer to tie the game for the seventh time on the evening.

Myers put the Hawks ahead once again on a power layup with the foul by Palmer with 0:40 seconds left to give UMES and 72-70 lead. Stephens delivered once again nailing a long range three-pointer with 2.3 seconds remaining to seal the ,73-72 , overtime victory for the Bulldogs.

Freshman forward Tashombe Riley chipped 11 points and seven rebounds, while Palmer added nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the win.

UMES had four players in double-figures including Myers. Devin Martin and Devon Walker finished with 14 each, while guard Ishaq Pitt posted a solid performance for the Hawks playing in over 40 minutes to finish with 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assist.

SC State returns home to take on Norfolk State on Saturday (Jan. 24) in a pivotal MEAC doubleheader with the women beginning at 4 p.m., and the men following immediately afterwards in a 6 p.m. start.
