Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – With the fifth set tied at 14-all, The Citadel's women's volleyball team scored two consecutive points to secure a 3-2 win (25-17, 25-27, 23-25, 25-12, 16-14) over South Carolina State on Tuesday night at Dukes Gymnasium.
The Citadel (4-7) took the first set, but SC State (0-11) was ready to play in the second set. The Lady Bulldogs jumped to a quick 5-1 lead and stayed ahead for most of the set. Tied 24-all, SC State took the lead on a block by
Marissa Lawrence and
Kirby Anderson. The Citadel answered with a kill by Ise d'Angelo, but SC State got the win on a service error by Carla Bruce and an ace by Anderson.
The Lady Bulldogs rolled to the win in set 3, but lost momentum in the fourth set. The Citadel took a commanding 21-9 lead and secured the win while limiting SC State to just 12 points in the set.
In set 5, SC State scored the first two points. The teams traded points along the way and forced 10 ties in the short set. Bailey Kernodle's ace put The Citadel up 15-14 and an attack error by
Erica Pritchett sealed the win for The Citadel.
D'Angelo had a match-high-tying 19 kills, while Kernodle had 14 and Lauren Hurt and Dominique Williams had 10 kills each for The Citadel. Rachel Keefer had a match-high 44 assists.
For SC State, Lawrence had 19 kills and seven digs. Pritchett tallied 12 kills and
Melanie Williams had 36 assists. Reigning SC State Female Athlete of the Week
Tyler Ockleberry matched her career-high with 20 digs.
Shandice Sluch also played well defensively with 11 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs hit the road again this weekend, this time traveling to Chattanooga, Tenn. to take part in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Scenic City Showdown. They play UT-Martin at 3 p.m. on Friday and UT-Chattanooga at 12:3 p.m. and Stetson University at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
