Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina State women's volleyball team dropped two matches on Saturday, falling 3-1 to USC Upstate and 3-0 to Jacksonville University in the Charleston Southern Wingate Invitational Tournament.
In the first match of the day, the Lady Bulldogs (0-10) attacked first and took the first set 25-18. SC State got the first point of the set on a Spartan attack error and took a 3-2 lead after a service error by Upstate's Alexa Lagaly. During the rest of the set, the Lady Bulldogs led by as any as six points (22-16) en route to their second set win of the season.
Upstate (5-4) got serious and swept the next three sets 25-11, 25-16, 25-21 to take the match. Kayla McAvoy had 17 kills and Shannon Weiss had 12. Lexi Gober had a match-high 42 assists.
For SC State,
Kirby Anderson had nine kills, while
Melanie Williams had a double-double of 27 assists and 10 digs.
Tyler Ockleberry and
Shandice Sluch also had double-digit digs with 17 and 11, respectively.
In the afternoon match, Jacksonville (6-4) won in three sets, 25-17, 25-21, 25-13. SC State put up the most fight in the second set, but could not overcome the all-around play of the Dolphins.
Sammie Strausbaugh had a double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs, while Emily Leskelle had 12 kills and Jizzian Gesualdo passed out 32 assists.
Marissa Lawrence led the Lady Bulldog offense with nine kills, while Williams had 19 assists and Ockleberry had 11 digs. Ockleberry was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 38 digs (12.7 per match) and seven assists for the weekend.
SC State takes a break from tournament play to play its home opener against The Citadel on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
