Alabama State Defeats SC State 3-0

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State women's volleyball team defeated South Carolina State 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-19) in the final game of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup I Tournament presented by Doubletree by Hilton. The Hornets improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Lady Bulldogs dropped to 0-4.

Junior outside hitter Marissa Lawrence was named to the all-tournament team after recording 31 kills, 17 digs, 1.5 blocks and one service ace in four matches this weekend.

The first set was the most competitive of the three sets. After eight ties to start the set, SC State took the lead on a kill by Shandice Sluch from Victoria Rushin to go up 9-8. The Lady Bulldogs pushed the lead to five, 14-9, after a kill by Lawrence.

The Hornets rallied back, however, and took the lead (16-15) after back-to-back SC State attack errors. Not to be outdone, SC State fought back and tied the set at 24-all, but a Lawrence attack error and a kill by Amber Bennett gave ASU the win.

It was smooth sailing for ASU in sets two and three en route to winning the match.

Bennett and Myla Marshall, who were also named to the all-tournament team, led ASU with 12 and nine kills, respectively. Ellyn Jones had 14 assists and Brooke Beasley had a double-double of 13 assists and 13 digs.

Lawrence led SC State's offensive effort with eight kills and added eight digs, two assists and one total block. Erica Pritchett had seven kills and eight digs, Rushin had a 20 assists and Tyler Ockleberry had a team-leading 12 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs are off until next Saturday when they travel to Tampa, Fla. to play in the University of South Florida Tournament. They take on Buffalo at 2 p.m. and Florida International at 5 p.m. on Saturday and they play host USF at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
