SC State Falls Short 50-47 To College of Charleston

Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C.—The South Carolina State Bulldogs two-game winning streak was snapped after dropping a tough, 50-47, defeat to the College of Charleston on Thursday at the TD Arena.

Freshman guard Edward Stephens led the Bulldogs with a game-high 15points and six rebounds. Junior forward Darryl Palmer grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, along with seven blocks and six points in the loss.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start, combining for just 45 points at halftime with College of Charleston leading 25-20 during intermission. It was a defensive battle throughout, the Bulldogs are among the top 50-ranked teams in country from the perimeter, but was held to just 28.6% (4-for-14) from behind the arc.

CofC lead by as many as eight, 43-35 with 6:22 remaining in regulation. A 3-pointer by sophomore guard Karon Wright cut the lead to one, 48-47, with 0:29 seconds remaining in the contest. Sophomore forward Joe Chealy made a pair of free-throws with 0:10 seconds remaining the seal the 50-47 victory over the Bulldogs.

"My guys played a great game tonight and at the end it came down to one possession to determine the outcome," said SC State head coach Murray Garvin.  "We fought hard to stay in it but came up short in the end."

Freshman Evan Bailey came off the bench to lead all CofC scorers with 11 points including 3-for-6 shooting percentage behind the three-point arc. Anthony Stitt  added 10 in the victory.

Despite, the low shooting from the field by both teams with SC State shooting a season low 33.3% (17-of-51) and College of Charleston 30.8% (16-of-52), turnovers was the deciding factor down the stretch for the Bulldogs.

CofC forced 16 turnovers, but South Carolina State led  in the paint (SCSU 18, CofC 14), off turnovers (SCSU 15, CofC 9), 2nd chance points (SCSU 10, CofC 4) and fast break (SCSU 12, CofC 4).

South Carolina State returns to action on Sunday they host Coastal Carolina in a non-conference contest at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The Bulldogs will look to avenge an early season, 66-52 (12/2/14), setback to the Chanticleers in Conway. Tip-off is 3 pm.
