Bethune-Cookman Outlasts SC State Volleyball 3-2

Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Delicia Pierre had a match-high 21 kills, while teammate Jill Arlaud had 11 kills to lead the Bethune-Cookman women's volleyball team to a 3-2 (25-13, 9-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-8) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon at Dukes Gym.

The first set started out close. SC State (2-22, 2-5 MEAC) tied things at 4-all on a kill by Erica Pritchett. The Wildcats then went on an 11-5 run to distance themselves from the Lady Bulldogs. A kill by Marissa Lawrence ended the run, but B-CU (8-18, 6-1) outscored SC State 10-3 the rest of the way to take the first set.

The Lady Bulldogs came out focused in set 2 and took a quick 7-0 lead. The Wildcats got on the board on an SC State service error, but the Lady Bulldogs controlled the remainder of the set and limited B-CU to just nine points.

The Wildcats won set 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the match, but SC State thundered back in the fourth set to win 26-24 and tie the match at 2-2.

B-CU took fast 8-1 lead to start the deciding set. The Lady Bulldogs kept fighting and pulled within five, 12-7, after a B-CU attack error, but the Wildcats settled down after a time out and cruised to the 15-8 set win to take the match.

Hazel Ortiz-Rosado tallied a match-high 42 assists and Normarie Rolon led B-CU with 16 digs.

Pritchett matched her career-high with 18 kills and added seven digs. Kirby Anderson had a great all-around game as she recorded 10 kills, 10 total blocks (four solo) and four digs, while hitting .375. Lawrence also had double-digit kills with 11 and added eight digs and two service aces.

Melanie Williams had a double-double of 41 assists and 11 digs and Tyler Ockleberry had 16 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs have a week off. They take on Savannah State at 2 p.m. next Sunday. Pritchett, the team's lone senior, will be honored before the game in the Senior Day Ceremony.
