ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The South Carolina State women's volleyball team hosts Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponents North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central this weekend at Dukes Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs play A&T at 6 p.m. on Friday and N.C. Central at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
This past Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs (1-17, 0-2 MEAC) fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-20) to Charleston Southern at Dukes Gym. Statistically, junior
Marissa Lawrence leads the team in kills (156; 2.5 per set), while junior
Melanie Williams has the most assists (296; 5.1 per set) on the team. Redshirt freshman
Tyler Ockleberry has a team-leading 211 digs (3.5 per set) and freshman
Kirby Anderson has a team-best 55 total blocks (0.9) per set.
Kirby ranks third in the conference in total blocks and Ockleberry is fourth in digs.
N. C. A&T is 1-18 on the season and 1-2 in MEAC play. The Aggies dropped two MEAC matches last weekend, falling 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11) at Bethune-Cookman and 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 28-26) at Florida A&M. Brooke Stamnes leads the team in kills (173; 2.6 per set) and Ashley Johnson is tops in digs (266; 3.8 per set).
N.C. Central also dropped two matches to the Florida schools last weekend. The Eagles lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-19) at FAMU on Friday and 3-2 (22-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-10) at B-CU on Sunday. NCCU plays at Savannah State at 6 p.m. on Friday before playing in Orangeburg on Sunday. Paige Phillips leads her team with 374 assists (6.0 per set) for the season and Kelsey Murphy leads the team in kills (159; 2.5 per set) and service aces (26).
