Orangeburg, S.C., September 3, 2013—The SC State women's soccer team went 1-1 in the 2013 Sleep Inn/Bulldog Classic held this past weekend, Friday and Sunday, Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, at the Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium.  The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazers, who finished the tournament 2-0, captured the tournament title.

On the first day of the tournament (Friday, Aug. 30), SC State (3-2) defeated Gardner-Webb, 2-0.  In the victory, newcomer Janell Cash, (Jr., Charleston, S.C.), scored the Lady Bulldogs first goal off an unassisted shot in the 34th minute.  The Lady Bulldogs second goal was scored by freshman Kaitlyn O'Neill off a corner kick by senior Tori Papp in the 71st minute of the contest.

SC State showed lots of hustle and tenacity in its second match of the tournament (Sunday, Sept. 1), dropping a close 3-2 decision in overtime to UAB.  The Lady Bulldogs found themselves down, 2-0, heading into intermission, but would not hang their heads.  With just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest, Cash, who picked up her second goal on the weekend, scored off a cross from senior Kaitlynn Cortez who received the lead pass from junior Dominique Brown at the 84:02 mark of the game.  The Lady Bulldogs second goal came just 1:43 later, (85:55), when freshman Justina Jarema scored off a corner kick by newcomer Amelia Green (Sr., St. John's, Antiqua) which tied the game at 2-2, forcing the extra period.  UAB's Abby Phillips managed to shoot the ball past SC State's goal keeper just below four minutes of the overtime period to help the Blazers squeak past the Lady Bulldogs, 3-2, to pick up the win.  Sam Bradford assisted on the game-winning goal.

“I am extremely proud of the effort our team gave today (Sunday). With it being the fifth game in nine days, the team really dug deep to fight hard to come back from early deficit,” said head coach Sandy Burris.  “We are starting to understand how each other play and how to play team defense. It is great to see the progression we are making with every game.”

SC State will return to action Friday, Sept. 6 when they travel to Lexington, Va. to face the Keydets of VMI. The Lady Bulldogs will play its next home game on Sunday, Sept. 8 when they host Stetson.  First kick is set for 1 p.m.

In other action of the tournament, Gardner-Webb went 1-1 over the weekend, defeating Francis Marion and falling to SC State while Francis-Marion went winless over the weekend falling to UAB and Gardner-Webb.
