SC State Women’s Volleyball Team Falls to Host Citadel on Day One of The Citadel Invitational

Charleston, S.C.—The SC State women's volleyball team fell to The Citadel Bulldogs, 3-0, (17-25, 20-25, 14-25), on day one of The Citadel Invitational. The tournament, which is being contested at McAlister Field House, concludes tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 14.

Senior Desire Waller recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs, to lead SC State. Sophomore Melanie Williams put 21 set assists with seven digs while freshman Victoria Ferguson picked up a team-high 13 digs as the Lady Bulldogs dropped to 0-7 on the season.

The Citadel was led by Bailey Kernodle with nine kills. Rachel Keefer put up a game-high 32 set assists while Erin Bucherl had a game-high 14 digs for the Bulldogs who improved to 1-6.

The Citadel controlled Set One early, going up by as many as six, 16-10, before the SC State's offense picked up. The Lady Bulldogs used a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to three, 18-15. The Bulldogs regained control of the set, using a 4-0 run of their own to take the 22-15 advantage. The Citadel would go on to take Set One, 25-17.

SC State increased its intensity at the start of Set Two, forcing The Citadel into a back-and-forth set that included nine ties and five lead changes. The Bulldogs offensive increased, as they used a 4-0 run to push the lead to three, 18-15. The Citadel kept the pressure on, closing Set Two on a 7-5 run en route to the 25-20 set victory.

The Citadel maintained the momentum to start Set Three, opening with a 4-1 advantage. SC State fought back to within two points, 4-6, before the Bulldogs managed to push their lead to six, 11-5. After allowing two straight points by the Lady Bulldogs, The Citadel rattled off eight straight points to take the 12 point lead, 19-7. The Lady Bulldogs continued to fight until the end, scoring the next 7-of-9 points to pull within eight, 21-13. The Bulldogs went on to take Set Three, 25-14, and the match 3-0.

SC State will have the first game of Day Two of The Citadel Invitational, when they face Radford at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs will close out its tournament play against Charleston Southern at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
