SC State Women’s Soccer Goes 1-1 During its 2013 Opening Weekend

Orangeburg, S.C.—The SC State women's soccer team went 1-1 during their 2013 opening weekend.  The Lady Bulldogs defeated Alabama A&M, 5-0 on Friday (Aug. 23) and dropped a 0-5 decision to Alabama State on Sunday (Aug. 25).

In the win over Alabama A&M, SC State scored four-of-its-five goals in the first half of the contest.  Junior Dominique Brown scored the Lady Bulldogs first goal of the game off a 19 yard free kick in the 17th minute.  Seniors Kaitlynn Cortez and Tori Papp teamed up just over four minutes later (21:48) to score the Lady Bulldogs next goal, to give the team the 2-0 advantage. Freshman Janelle Cash scored the team's third goal off an assist from sophomore Rhea Anne Currie at the 25:10 mark of the game.  With just under 10 minutes remaining in the half, seniors Amelia Green scored the team's fourth goal off an assist by Cortez to give the Lady Bulldogs the 4-0 lead heading into intermission.

SC State's offense was stagnant for the first 27 minutes of the second half.  Senior Kaitlyn Penner hit the back of the net off a penalty kick at the 72:06 mark, to end the scoring drought for the Lady Bulldogs. SC State's defense remained solid of the next 17 plus minutes en route to the 5-0 victory.

SC State could not manage to find its offense in their second game of the weekend.  Despite outshooting Alabama State, 13-12, with seven shots at the goal, the Lady Bulldogs could not manage to score.  SC State's one goal that found the back of the net was reversed due to an offside player.  The Hornets managed to capitalize on its opportunities at the net, scoring on five-of-eight changes, connecting on two goals in the first half and three in the second  en route to the 5-0 victory.

SC State will look to rebound this Wednesday, Aug. 28, when they open their 2013 home season against Presbyterian in a 7 p.m. contest.  The Lady Bulldogs will host the 2013 Sleep-Inn Bulldog Classic this weekend, Friday and Sunday, Aug. 30 and Sept. 1.  The first match of the Classic is set for 5 p.m. Friday with Francis Marion facing off against the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB).   The Lady Bulldogs will then host Gardner-Webb at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.  Sunday contests are set to begin at 11 a.m. with the Lady Bulldogs hosting UAB followed by Francis Marion versus Gardner-Webb.  All Lady Bulldogs home contest are free and open to public and played at the Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium on the campus of SC State.
