Lady Bulldogs claim top spot in southern division with win

ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's and women's tennis moved one step closer to claiming the top-seed in the Southern Division after knocking off Florida A&M Saturday at the SCSU Tennis Courts.
      The Lady Bulldogs improved to 11-4 overall, 5-0 in the MEAC after dominating the Lady   7-0. Meanwhile the men, facing their toughest task of the season knocked of FAMU, 4-3 to tie for the top spot in the southern division at a 2-1 mark in the conference.
        South Carolina State celebrating “Senior Day” saluted five student-athletes from both the men's and women's team who will be played their final collegiate match in Orangeburg. Those who were honored on the women's side were All-MEAC performers Maria Craciun and Laura Bosneag both from Romania. Senior's Tomas Bizon, Anton Protsenko, and Peteris Vinogradous were saluted for the men.
     The Bulldogs (10-4, 2-1 MEAC) claimed the doubles point early on after Vinogradovs/Dragoi def.   /Asafu- Adaye 8-3 and Bizon/Stiburek knocked off Gabriel/ Mushonga 8-6.
         In singles action senior Anton Protsenko def. Gabriel at the No. 2 spot in two sets 6-3, 7-6; junior Artemiy Nikitin def. Everden in two sets 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot and freshman Jiri Stiburek claimed the winning point at the No. 6 with a win over Takura 6-4, 6-2.
         “We played better doubles today and worked hard on being aggressive and that was the key for the start of the match,” said SC State head coach Hardeep Judge. “We played well in singles against a very good FAMU team, but really need to work harder the next three weeks to get prepared for a tough Conference Championship.”
