SC State Women’s Volleyball Team Defeats Savannah State 3-0 in MEAC Match

Savannah, Ga.—The SC State women's volleyball team closed its 2013 road season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-16), Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win over Savannah State. With the victory the Lady Bulldogs improves to 4-21 overall and 3-5 in the MEAC while Savannah State falls to 0-28 overall and 0-8 in the MEAC.

SC State opened the match very aggressive jumping out to a 9-3 lead in set one. The Lady Bulldogs pushed its lead to six, 14-8 and went up by as many as eight late in the set, 22-14. Savannah State managed to use a 4-1 run to close the gap to five, 24-19, but a Lady Tiger service error gave SC State the 25-19 set one victory.

The Lady Bulldogs remained aggressive to start set two. After exchanging side-outs over the first 10 possessions, SC State went on an 8-1 run to take the 13-6 advantage and never looked back. The Lady Bulldogs owned a 10 point lead, 18-8, before going on to win set two 25-19 and take the 2-0 match lead into intermission.

SC State maintained the momentum out of intermission. The Lady Bulldogs never allowed Savannah State to get its offensive moving in set three. SC State used an 8-1 run midway through the set to take a 14-6 advantage. The Lady Tigers cut the deficit to five, 18-13, but could not get any closer. The Lady Bulldogs closed set three on a 7-3 run to take the 25-16 set three victory and 3-0 match win.

Desire Waller had eight kills while Alyse Lewis, Erica Pritchett and Marissa Lawrence had six kills each for the Lady Bulldogs. Pritchett and Lewis lead the team defensively with nine digs and five total blocks, respectively. Melanie Williams ran an effective offense putting up a match-high 29 set assists in the victory.

Savannah State was led by Justice Dilworth with a match-high 10 kills. Bryana Gadis had five kills while Asiha Williams had nine digs in the loss.

SC State will close out the 2013 regular season at home next Friday and Sunday, Nov. 8 and 10, when they host North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T, respectively. Friday's match is set for a 7 p.m. start while first serve for Sunday's match is set for 3 p.m.
