SC State Falls Hampton in the Opening Round of the MEAC Post-Season Tournament

Baltimore, Md.—For the third straight season the SC State women's volleyball team fell to Hampton in opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball championships. The Lady Bulldogs dropped the match, 1-3, (25-22, 14-25, 18-25, 22-25). The championships, which run through Sunday (Nov. 17), are being played at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State in Baltimore, Md.

The teams battled throughout the match from start to finish. SC State struck first winning the set one, 25-22. Hampton recovered in the second set, hitting .444 en route to the 14-25 set two victory to tie the match at 1-1 heading into intermission.

The teams went back-and-forth over the first 30 exchanges of the third set before Hampton used a 3-0 run to take the 18-15 lead and never relinquish it. The Lady Pirates closed the set on an overall 10-3 run en route to the 25-18 set three victory.

After going up two sets to one, Hampton appeared to have control of the match but SC State would not be outdone. The Lady Bulldogs showed a lot of hustle and tenacity in set four. After falling behind 1-5 in the set, SC State's offense came to life. The Lady Bulldogs used a 4-0 run to tie the game at 5-5. Hampton once again gained control of the set, pushing its lead to seven, 7-14, but SC State continued to press, using an 11-4 run to tie the game once again at 18-18. The team exchanged side-outs for the remainder of the set before Hampton won the last three points en route to the 25-22 set three win and the 3-1 match victory.

Desire Waller, who was named to the All-MEAC First Team, led SC State with 14 kills. She also recorded seven digs with seven total blocks in the match. Sophomore Marissa Lawrence recorded double-digit kills with 10. Junior Erica Pritchett contributed six kills with seven digs and seniors Taylor Bailey and Alyse Lewis had five total blocks each for SC State, who closed out its season with a 6-21 overall record and 5-5 in the MEAC.

Vendula Strakova, the 2013 MEAC Player of the Year, recorded a match-high 22 kills to lead the Lady Pirates who improved to 17-10 overall. Sonja Maksimoic had 16 kills and Bibiany Fonseca put up a match-high 42 set assists in the victory.
