SC State Falls to Bethune-Cookman in Women’s Volleyball

Daytona Beach, Fla.—The SC State women's volleyball fell to Bethune-Cookman, 3-0, (12-25, 23-25, 23-25), in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup in Daytona Beach. The match was the third of three straight road matches for the Lady Bulldogs.

After falling in set one, 25-12, SC State picked up their intensity at the start of set two. The Lady Bulldogs rattled off four straight points to open the set which forced Bethune-Cookman into an early timeout. SC State pushed its lead to six, 9-3, and managed to maintain a five-point lead until late in the set when Bethune-Cookman cut the gap to three, 22-19. The Lady Wildcats closed the set on a 6-1 run to take the 25-23 set two victory.

Bethune-Cookman maintained the momentum at the start of set three. After SC State scored the first two points of the set, the Lady Wildcats scored the next 7-of-8 points to take the 7-3 advantage. After the run, the Lady Bulldogs used a timeout to regroup. SC State scored the next three-of-four points out of the timeout to cut the deficit to two, 6-8. Bethune-Cookman pushed its lead to 11-6 but SC State continued to fight, scoring the next two points to stay within striking distance. The Lady Wildcats took its largest lead of eight, 24-18, but the Lady Bulldogs would not go away. SC State scored five straight points to pull within one, 24-23 before dropping the set, 25-23 and the match 3-0.

Senior Desire Waller led all attackers with a match-high 12 kills. She also picked up nine digs with two block assists. Sophomore Marissa Lawrence had nine kills and freshman Alexis Moses had eight digs for SC State who fell to 3-20 overall and 2-5 in the MEAC.

Rhea Simon had nine kills while Delicia Pierre had six kills and six digs for Bethune-Cookman. Jennifer Jimenez had nine digs for the Lady Wildcats who improved to 6-22 overall and 5-2 in the MEAC.

SC State will host Charleston Southern, Tuesday, Oct. 29, in its final non-conference match of the season. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Dukes Gymnasium.
