SC State Falls to North Carolina Central in a MEAC Volleyball Match

Durham, N.C.—The SC State women's volleyball fell to North Carolina Central, 1-3, (21-25, 26-28, 25-19, 22-25) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup.

Senior Desire Waller recorded her second straight double-double of the weekend, 23 kills-11 digs, to lead SC State. Sophomore Marissa Lawrence put down 10 kills and picked up a career-high nine digs while senior Taylor Bailey had five assisted blocks in the match. Freshman Victoria Ferguson picked up a match-high 15 digs for the Lady Bulldogs.

After falling behind two sets to none heading into intermission, SC State (2-17, 2-3 MEAC) began the third set very aggressive. The Lady Bulldogs opened the set on a 6-2 run and never looked back. North Carolina Central (2-20, 2-2 MEAC) did manage to pull within two, 19-17, but SC State continued to press, winning set three, 25-19, to force a fourth set.

The Lady Bulldogs remained aggressive at the start of set four, opening on an 8-1 run and forcing the Lady Eagles into a timeout. SC State scored the next two points out of the timeout to push its lead to nine, 10-1, before North Carolina Central's offense got going. North Carolina Central used a 10-2 run midway through the set to pull within one, 17-16. The Lady Eagles maintained the momentum for the remainder of the set. North Carolina Central closed the set on an 8-2 run en route to the 25-22 set four win.

Da'sha Brown put down 12 kills and Melissa Rabell Pineiro and Kalin Russell had 10 kills each to lead North Carolina Central offensively. Russell recorded eight total blocks (2 solo-6 assists) and Kelsey Murphy picked up 14 digs for the Lady Eagles.

SC State will host Alabama A&M in a non-conference match this Tuesday, Oct. 15. First serve for Tuesday's match is set for 7 p.m. in Dukes Gymnasium.
