Morgan State Knocks Off SC State, 76-60

Bulldogs dropped 18th straight conference game

Toombs led the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points in the loss.
Box Score BALTIMORE, MD—The South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-11 overall, 0-2 MEAC) suffered its eighth straight loss, after suffering a 76-60 setback to Morgan State  Saturday at Hill Field House.
        With the loss the Bulldogs dropped 18-straight conference games in a row, the last time South Carolina State won a conference game was March 12, 2010 when the Bulldogs knocked off Delaware State, 70-66 in overtime to advance to the MEAC Championship game against Morgan State.
      “It puts your backs against the wall early on in the conference having dropped two very important league games,” said SC State head coach Tim Carter. “We just have to keep working and turn things around against Coppin State on Monday.”
     Senior guard Khalif Toombs led the way for the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points and five assists, while shooting a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Meanwhile teammate junior Matthew Hezekiah tossed in 13  and grabbed five rebounds, while freshman forward Darryl Palmer added 10 in the loss.
      The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-2 lead off a dunk by Palmer at the 18:12 mark early in the first-half. Red-shirt junior center Ian Chiles tied the game, 22-22, on a driving layup with 9:58 remaining in the half. The Bears sparked a 9-1 run off a layup by sophomore forward Shaquille Duncan to put Morgan State ahead, 32-23.
        Toombs tossed in a 3-pointer with 0:36 seconds remaining before halftime to cut the lead to five, 36-31. Morgan State held a 38-31 led over South Carolina State at the half.
        The Bears came out on fire in the second-half with back-to-back 3-pointers by guards DeWayne Jackson and Justin  Black to extends Morgan State's lead to 15, 52-37 at the 14:49 mark in the game.
       Sophomore guard Devin Joint playing in his first game of the season after suffering a preseason injury pull the Bulldogs within 10, 55-45, off  breakaway dunk with 9:33 remaining. Jackson's jumper gave Morgan State their biggest margin of the night 19, 70-51 with 5:25 left in regulation.
      Morgan State held on to 76-60 victory over South Carolina State to improve to 4-8 overall, 1-0 in the MEAC. The Bears had five players who posted double figures scores, with Justin Black leading the way with 17 points. Jackson tossed in 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists, while Chiles added 14 and grabbed a leading eight rebounds. Sophomore's Blake Bozeman and Shaquille Duncan each finished with 10 each in the win.
         Carter stated, “I am very pleased with Devin's effort today despite the outcome. After coming back from a knee injury the way he did and give us 19 minutes of play, really gives us a lift moving forward.”
    South Carolina State will return to action on Monday when they face neighboring Coppin State in a pivotal MEAC doubleheader. Tip-off for the men's is 7:30 p.m., immediately following the women's contest.
