SC State Women’s Volleyball To Host Campbell in Season-Opener

Orangeburg, S.C.—The SC State women's volleyball team will host Campbell University in its 2012 home-opener.  First serve for the contest is set for 7 p.m. in Dukes Gymnasium on the campus of SC State.  The game was originally scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. 

SC State opened its 2012 season with two straight road tournaments.  The Lady Bulldogs completed its opening road swing with a 2-4 overall record.  In their last outing (Sept. 1), the Lady Bulldogs came away with a 3-1, victory over Louisiana Tech. 

The Campbell Camels enters tomorrow's game with a 4-7 overall record, having lost their last three matches.  Jessica Groen leads the Camels with 97 kills (2.42 k/s) while Mallori Cubillos leads the team defensively with 101 digs (4.04 dig/s).

For the Lady Bulldogs, sophomore transfer Maya Bell leads the team with 44 kills (2.59 k/s) while E. Paige Webb has 43 kills (2.05 k/s) and 79 digs.  Junior Desire Waller, the 2011 MEAC Player of the Year, has 40 kills and junior Alyse Lewis is having a breakout season at the net with a total of 22 blocks (6-solo-16 assists).  Freshman setter Melanie Williams is having no problems controlling the offense as she has put up 174 set assists in six matches.

The Lady Bulldogs have nine days off from competition before heading to Norfolk, Va. the weekend of Friday-Saturday, Sept. 21-22, to participate in the Spartan Invitational hosted by Norfolk State.  The Lady Bulldogs will return home on Friday, Oct. 12 when they host North Carolina A&T in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up.

All SC State home volleyball games are played in Dukes Gymnasium unless otherwise noted and are free of charge.
