Orangeburg, S.C.--Ashley Herndon scored with 25 seconds remaining in double-overtime to give Winthrop the 2-1 victory over SC State in a non-conference soccer matchup. With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fall to 2-2-0 on the season while Winthrop improved to 1-1-0.
Devin Puckett put Winthrop on the board first as she scored off an assist by Tori Davis in the 37th minute of the first half. The Eagles held SC State scoreless for the remainder of the half and enjoyed a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half of the match was a defensive contest until the 72nd minute when the Lady Bulldogs Blanca Barrio dished the ball to Brooke Contreras that led to the tying goal. Neither team would score in the remaining 18 minutes thus sending the contest into overtime knotted up 1-1.
After the first 10 minute extra period the scored remained 1-1 and headed into double-overtime. After nine minutes in the second overtime period, the game appeared to be headed to a tie; however, a foul committed by an SC State player gave the Eagles a free kick. Herndon lined up the ball on her own 45 and managed to shoot the ball pass several defenders and as well as the Lady Bulldogs goalie to secure the 2-1 victory.
SC State will remain at home this weekend, Friday and Sunday, August 31 and September 2, when they host the Sleep Inn/Bulldog Classic. SC State will face Maine on Friday at 7:30 and Alabama State at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Francis Marion and Alabama State will kick off the Classic at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Francis Marion will face Maine on Sunday at 11 a.m. All games of the classic will be played at the Oliver C. Dawson stadium on the campus of SC State.
