SC State Goes 1-1 on the Final Day of the Big Orange Bash

Lady Bulldogs Pick Up First Win of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clemson, S.C.—The SC State women's volleyball team went 1-1on Day Two of the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson University.  The Lady Bulldogs finish the two-day tournament, with a 1-2 record.

In Match One of the day the SC State (1-2) fell to Clemson, 3-0, (11-25, 15-25, 17-25).  The Tigers controlled match throughout, holding the Lady Bulldogs to just a .070 hitting percentage for the match.  E. Paige Webb continued to play solid offensively for SC State as she put down seven kills with eight digs.  Maya Bell also had seven kills and contributed six digs with two block assists.  Freshman setter Melanie Williams put up 20 set assists with one block solo and two block assists in the loss.  As a team the Lady Bulldogs recorded 23 kills with a six team blocks.

Clemson had three players to record double-digit kills led by Kristin Faust with 12.  Sandra Adeleye put down 11 and Moneshia Simmons had 10.  Natalie Patzin picked up a game-high 13 digs while Simmons had nine with one block solo and four block assists.

Game Two on the day was a battle between SC State and Coastal Carolina from start to finish.  The teams exchanged points throughout the First Set with Coastal Carolina coming away with a 25-23 Set One victory.  SC State rallied to take Set Two by the same margin, 25-23.  Set Three of the match was perhaps the most competitive set of the match.  Coastal Carolina took the early set advantage with a 12-9 lead.  The Lady Bulldogs rebounded quickly using a 6-1 run to take a 15-12 lead and never relinquish it.  The Chanticleers managed to tie the set at 17-17 but the Lady Bulldogs kept pressing, eventually winning Set Three, 25-20.  Coastal Carolina completely controlled Set Four, jumping ahead 6-3.  The Chanticleer's pushed their lead to as many as seven, 17-10, before going on to win the set, 25-20.  Set Five belonged solely to SC State.  The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 7-4 lead and used an 8-5 run down the stretch to take Set Five 15-8, and the match 3-2.

Junior Alyse Lewis had a career match recording career-highs in kills and blocks.  For the match she had 10 kills and 8 total blocks including five solos.  The Lady Bulldogs had four players to finish the match with double-digit kills as senior E. Paige Webb had 17, newcomer Maya Bell had 14, freshman Shandice Sluch had 10 and Lewis.  Webb recorded her first season double-double picking up a team-high 16 digs in the contest.  Freshman Melanie Williams also recorded a double-double with 45 set assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Dorian Corbett contributed 11 digs in the victory.

Meghan Laffin led Coastal Carolina offensively with 19 kills.  Lian Bernett added 12 kills with nine digs as the Chanticleer's fell to 0-3 on the season.

Tournament Notes:  Paige Webb was named to the All-Tournament Team finishing the three matches with 31 kills (2.82), five assists and 35 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs will have six days off from competition before heading to Beaumont, Texas to participate in the Lamar Invitational Friday-Saturday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1.  SC State will open its 2012 home season on Tuesday, Sept. 11, when they host Campbell University.
