ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's and women's tennis teams captured the MEAC Southern Division title Friday knocking off Bethune-Cookman at SCSU Tennis Courts on “Senior Day”.
SC State seniors Suhaila Jad (Spain), Dmytro Kovalevych (Ukraine), Sabrina Mendez (Spain) and Young Kwan Lee (South Korea) were honored, while playing their final home match at SCSU Tennis Courts.
“I'm really proud of my team and the way they played all season, “said SC State head coach Hardeep Judge. “While this is a great win for us we have to finish strong and try and win another MEAC Championship.”
On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs (15-0 overall, 4-0 MEAC) remain undefeated defeating Bethune-Cookman in dominating fashion 7-0. Jad led the way in singles action, with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Katarina Szaboova.
Other singles winners were Sabrina Mendez def. Sheree Peterson-Paul 6-4, 6-0, AKilah James def. Stacey Spiller 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Maria Craciun downing Chinatsu Kajiwara 6-4, 6-2.
In men's action the Bulldogs (15-2 overall, 3-0 MEAC) manage to hold a scrappy Wildcat team 5-2, with Anton Protsenko leading the way in singles action with a 6-4, 5-1 victory over Diego Gravito.
Also posting singles victories were, Tomas Bizon def. Juan Varon (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 2 spot, Peteris Vinogradovs def. Santiago Lobelo (6-1, 6-1) at the No.4 spot, and Artimey Nikitin remains undefeated in singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kip Jackson.
With the victories both SC State men's and women's teams earn a top-seed in the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Championships held April 12-14, in Raleigh, NC at the Millbrook Tennis Complex.
SC State will return to action on Sunday, April 1, when they men travel to Boling Springs, NC to take on Gardner-Webb in a non-conference matchup, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
