SC State Set To Battle NC Central In Pivotal MEAC Doubleheader

DURHAM, NC---The South Carolina State men's and women's basketball teams wrap up a two-game road swing Monday (Feb. 13) when they battle NC Central in a pivotal MEAC doubleheader at McDougald-McLendon Gym. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
        The Bulldogs (5-19 overall, 0-10 MEAC), still seeking their first conference win of the season, will face a talented Eagle team (12-12 overall, 6-5 MEAC) seeking a run at its first conference crown.
       SC State is coming off an 85-55 loss at MEAC rival N.C. A&T State on Saturday, while NC Central dropped a 67-57 defeat to Savannah State in its last outing.
        Senior guard Brandon Riley leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 17.3 ppg, while floor general and point guard Khalif Toombs is second with 10.9 ppg. Senior Omar Sanders leads team in rebounding with 7.5 per contest and is scoring 10.3 points per contest.
        The Eagles are led by senior forward Dominique Sutton and junior guard Ray Willis, who are both averaging 15.8 points per game.  Sutton also leads the team in rebounding with 7.5 boards per game.  NC Central will still be without last season's leading scorer,Landon Clement who has missed the majority of the season due to a foot injury.
         On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs (10-11 overall, 5-5 MEAC) take on a struggling Lady Eagle team (3-21 overall, 1-10 MEAC) seeking to turn things around. In its last outing, SC State posted an impressive 71-68 road victory over N.C. A&T State, while NCCU snapped a 13-game losing streak with a 50-38 victory over visiting Savannah State.
         Junior point guard Tiara Knotts leads the SC Statw women in scoring with 12.3 ppg, while forward Paris Alston and guard Cabriel Duren are averaging a little over 8.5 points per outing. Junior forward Tiana Hemphill is the Lady Bulldog rebounding leader, grabbing 8.3 boards per contest.
        NC Central is led by Chasidy Williams with 14.6 ppg and 7.1 rebounds per game.
         Both SC State teams will return to action on Saturday when they host Bethune-Cookman in a crucial Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown. Tipoff  for the women's contest is set for 2 p.m. The men's game will follow immediately after.
