Orangeburg, S.C.—The SC State women's soccer team opened its 2012 Great West Conference (GWC) play with a 2-0 win over Howard.  With the win the Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-6-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the GWC.  The Lady Bison fell to 0-13-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the GWC.

Freshman Blanca Barrio got SC State on the scoreboard first, shooting the ball past the goalkeeper off an assist by senior Stephanie Searle in the 15th minute.  Both teams defensive was solid over the remainder of the half, with the Lady Bulldogs enjoying the 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

SC State started the second half very aggressive, picking up its second goal just 14 minutes into the half.  Barrio, who scored both goals for the Lady Bulldogs, capitalized off a pass off by freshman Rhea-Anne Currie in the 59th minute.  Neither team would score in the final 30 minutes thus giving SC State the 2-0 victory.

"This was a very important win for us,” said head coach Glad Bugariu.  “We played extremely well and scored two quality goals. Howard is a very tricky team and they have the ability to take points from the teams in our conference, so I am very happy we came away with all the points today."

The Lady Bulldogs will have four days off before returning to action Thursday, Oct. 11 when they host Houston Baptist in a Great West Conference contest.  Thursday's contest is set for a 7 p.m. start.
