State Women’s Volleyball Fell to Charleston Southern in its Final Non-Conference Game of the Season

Charleston, S.C.—The SC State women's volleyball team fell to Charleston Southern, 3-1, (21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25), in its final non-conference game of the season. Junior Desire Waller, who finished with a game-high 21 kills, eclipsed the 1000th career kill mark.  She currently sits fourth on the all-time list with 1,018.

The teams played a pretty even Set One as there were five ties and six lead changes throughout.  Charleston Southern managed to push their lead to three late, 20-17, and never to relinquish it going on to win Set One 25-21.

After going back and forth over the first 15 rotations, Charleston Southern took control of the set, using a 6-1 to jump out to a 21-16 lead.  The Lady Bulldogs went on a mini three-point run to close the gap to two, 21-19 but could not get any closer in the set, falling 20-25 in Set Two.

SC State jumped out to a 6-4 lead to start Set Three and remained aggressive throughout the set.  The Buccaneer's managed to tie the game at 8-8 but the Lady Bulldogs did not let up, regaining the lead one point later.  The Lady Bulldogs held off a late run by Charleston Southern to go on to win Set Three, 25-22 to extend the match.

The Buccaneers opened Set Four with 9-3 run to force SC State into an early timeout.  The Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run out of the timeout to even the contest at 9-9.  The teams then went on to exchange points with neither team able to take more than a one point advantage until late when Charleston Southern went on another 6-0 run to take the 16-22 lead.  The Buccaneers went on to capture the Set Four, 25-18, and the match 3-1.

Sophomore Maya Bell recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Junior Taylor Bailey had nine kills with seven block assists while Waller added six digs, one block solo and three block assists to her stat line.  The lone senior, E. Paige Webb picked up a game-high 22 digs and freshman setter Melanie Williams had a game-high 48 set assists as the Lady Bulldogs fell to 6-12 overall.

Charleston Southern had four players finish with double-digit kills led by Sydney Tracey with 13.  Kayla Klinger and Meredith Parrott each had 11 and Wynter Davis added 10 kills in the victory.  Ashley Higgenbothem and Klinger had double-digit digs with 15 and 12, respectively.

The Lady Bulldogs will host Florida A&M in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup this Friday, Oct. 26.  Friday's matchup is set for a 5 p.m. start.  SC State will host Bethune-Cookman Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.  Both contests will be played in Dukes Gymnasium on the campus of SC State.
