Orangeburg, S.C.— The South Carolina State women's volleyball team went 2-0 on day one of the 2011 SC State Spikefest. The tournament, which concludes tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 2) is being contested at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus of SC State.
In its opening match of the tournament, SC State (2-3) defeated neighboring Claflin University, 3-0, (25-16, 25-16, 25-18). Sophomore
Desire Waller led the charge for the Lady Bulldogs with a double-double, 10 kills-10 digs. Waller also contributed four aces and two block assists. Redshirt junior
Shabree Roberson was equally effective with nine kills, three aces and one block assists. Seniors
Bria Brimmer and
Brendell Studnicka had 29 set assists and 11 digs respectively.
SC State dominated its second match as they defeated The Citadel, 3-0, (25-14, 27-25, 25-15). The Lady Bulldogs held The Citadel Bulldogs to a .072 hitting percentage for the match. Waller had another outstanding match as she had a team high 10 kills with three aces and three block assists. Brimmer continued to run an effective offense as she had 27 set assists along with three digs and one block assist. Roberson put down six kills with four block assists and one ace.
The Lady Bulldogs will conclude the tournament Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. when they face Alabama State at 9 a.m. and Wofford at 3 p.m.
