Jacksonville, Fla.—The SC State women's volleyball team went 0-2 on day two of tournament play. The Lady Bulldogs participated in the Best Western & Springhill Suites Tournaments which were hosted by University of North Florida and Jacksonville University, respectively.
In its first match of the day, SC State (4-6) fell to Presbyterian, 3-1, (22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 20-25). The Lady Bulldogs started the match slow but eventually picked up its intensity midway through the first set. After falling in Set One SC State played with intensity for the remainder of the match. The Lady Bulldogs displayed tenacity throughout the remaining sets winning Set Two to tie the match at one set apiece. The Lady Bulldogs could not get over the hump dropping Sets Three and Four and eventually the match, 3-1.
Desiree Waller continued to play solid for SC State as she recorded her second double-double of the season, 14 kills-12 digs.
Brendell Studnicka picked up 12 digs while
Bria Brimmer put up 33 set assists for the Lady Bulldogs in the match.
Presbyterian had three players to record double-digit kills led by Carolina Cann with 15. Presley Mabrey contributed 14 and Kelly Berryman put down 10 kills in the match. Ashtin Frank put up 56 set assists and Mary Trimpe picked up 13 digs as the Blue Hose improved to 2-5 on the season.
In its final match of the weekend SC State fell to Jacksonville University, 3-1, (12-25, 11-25, 27-25, 25-20). The Lady Bulldogs began the match very sluggish as they were held to a combined 23 points heading into the 10 minute intermission between games two and three.
SC State began Set Three much more aggressive staying within three points of Jacksonville and enjoying a late one point at 16-15. Jacksonville remained poised going on a 3-0 run to regain the lead at 16-15. The Lady Bulldog would not be outdone as they once again tied the score at 21-21. The teams then begin to exchange points before SC State captured Set Three, 27-25 to force a fourth set. The teams continued to exchange points to start the Set Four with neither team taking more than a four point lead in the set. Jacksonville managed to take control of the set late, ending the set on a 5-3 run to take Set Four, 25-20 and the match, 3-1.
Desiree Waller recorded her second double-double on the day with 14 kills-11 digs. Waller also put down five block assists.
Shabree Roberson contributed eight kills with five total blocks and
Bria Brimmer put up 33 set assists in the loss.
Jacksonville had three players to record double-digit kills led by Alliya Drzewiecki with 14. Kylie Jacob and Nadia Booker recorded 11 kills each. Kendall Courtney put up 48 set assists and Ashley August picked up 18 digs in the win.
SC State will continue its stay on the road for the second-of-three straight road tournaments next weekend when they travel to Statesboro, Ga. to participate in the Springhill Suites Tournament hosted by Georgia Southern next weekend Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 15-17. The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Montgomery, Ala. (Sept. 23-24) before returning home to open its 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play on Friday, Sept. 30 versus Bethune-Cookman.
