ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's tennis team scored a huge victory defeating Georgia Southern 6-1 Wednesday at SCSU Tennis Courts in a non-conference matchup.
The Bulldogs improve to 1-1 on the season, while Georgia Southern falls to 3-4 on the season.
“We played really well against a good and talented Georgia Southern team today,” said SC State head coach
Hardeep Judge. “We just need to keep working hard so that when we get to conference play we can compete with some of the better teams.”
Georgia Southern jumped out early with Juan Puigventos defeating
Gabriel Meana 6-2, 6-2, Dymtro Kovalevych (Jr., Ukraine) def. Alain Garrdio 6-3, 7-6, and Anton Protsenko (So., Ukraine) defeated Matthijs Verdam 6-2.6-2.
Also posting wins in the single matches were Peteris Vinogradovs defeating Marco Osorio, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0. Freshman Artemiy Nikitin defeated Edio Costanbel 6-1, 6-1, and
David Grund defeated Thomas Bekkers, 6-1, 6-3.
SC State also won the doubles point as well with
Gabriel Meana/Peteris Vinogradous def. Juan Puigventos /Alan Garrido 8-7. Dymtro Kovalevcych /Anton Protsenko def. Allan Garrido/Marco Osorio 8-0, and Artemiy Nikitin/
David Grund def. Edio Castanhel/Mark Paetz 8-3.
South Carolina State will return to action on Saturday Feb.19, when they travel to Jacksonville, FL to take on Jacksonville University in a 1p.m showdown.
