SC State Face Coppin State In Crucial MEAC Doubleheader

Lady Bulldogs Host Think Pink Game

ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's and women's basketball team will host Coppin State in a crucial Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The Lady Bulldogs for the third straight season will support the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) fight against breast cancer. This year the team will wear pink shoelaces in support of the effort during Saturday's contest versus Coppin State. Tip-off for the women's game is 2 p.m., with the men following at 4 p.m.
        SC State is among approximately 1,100 schools that have joined forces with the WBCA during the Pink Zone® week (February 11-20, 2011) in an effort to bring more awareness to the fight against breast cancer.
       
Coach Doug Robertson Lady Bulldogs are led in scoring by senior guard/forward Whitney Wiley with 11.5 ppg and a team-leading 40 steals. Newcomer and junior forward/center Fannie Goodwin adds depths in the post with 7.5 ppg and 5.8  rpg, while sophomore guard Tiara Knotts chips in 7.0 points per contest., who enters his third season at the helm of the SC State women's (6-14 overall, 2-8  MEAC) basketball program, will take on a scrappy and talented Lady Eagle team of Coppin State.
              Meanwhile, South Carolina State (6-17, 2-8 MEAC) dropped a tough  65-53 defeat to Howard on Monday.  SC State is led in by senior guard/forward Darnell Porter with 11.4 ppg and 3.9 rpg, while junior guard Brandon Riley is second with 9.7 points per contest, junior's Omar Sanders and Joe Ikhinmwin and sophomore guard is chipping in a little over 7.1 per outing.
      A special presentation will take place at half-time of the women's game. Bulldog fans are asked to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Mrs. Shirley Caldwell, a Breast Cancer Survivor and an employee in the SC State Registrar Office, will serve as the Honorary Coach for the women's game.
       SC State department of athletics will be collecting donations and pledges during the game with all proceeds being split between the Kay Yow Cancer FundTM and the American Cancer Society.   
         Admission for the double-header will be $10 Reserve, $7 General Admission, and $5 for 17 and under and visiting students with a valid ID. For more information on tickets please contact the SC State ticket office at 803-536-8579.
