SC State Falls to Coastal Carolina in a Non-Conference Women’s Volleyball Match

Conway, S.C.—The SC State women's volleyball team fell to Coastal Carolina, 3-0, (18-25, 19-25, 23-25 ), in a non-conference match-up.  The contest, which was contested at Kimbel Arena in Conway, S.C., was the third-of-four straight road contests for the Lady Bulldogs.

SC State (15-14) jumped out to a 6-3 lead to start the match. Coastal Carolina wasted no time putting its offense into motion, as they used a 6-1 run to jump ahead 9-7.  The Chanticleers increased its lead to 12-9 and forced SC State into its first timeout of the set.  Coastal Carolina would go up by as many as five, 20-15, before going on to win Set One, 25-18.

Coastal Carolina controlled Set Two early.  The Chanticleers jumped out to a 7-3 lead but saw it quickly evaporate as SC State used a 5-1 run to tie the game at 8-8.  Coastal Carolina increased its lead to four once again, 14-10 and went up by seven, late in the Set (18-11).  The Lady Bulldogs managed to string together a 6-3 run to pull within four, 17-21, but could not recover from the huge deficit falling in Set Two, 25-19.

The Lady Bulldogs started Set Three a little more aggressive jumping out to a 6-2 lead.  Coastal Carolina fought its way back into the set, as they used a 6-2 run of their own to tie the game 8-8.  SC State remained poised scoring the next three points to regain the lead at 11-8. The Chanticleers continued to battle its, using a 5-0 run to pull even at 13-13.  Coastal Carolina took the 14-13 lead off a SC State miscue.  The Chanticleers increased its lead to 21-17 before the Lady Bulldogs offense came back to life. SC State used a 5-1 run to tie the match at 22-22.  After SC State took a 23-22 lead, the Chanticleers went on a 3-0 run to close the set 25-23 and capture the match 3-0.

Desire Waller was the only SC State player to record double-digit kills with 11.  Melissa Robinson picked up a game-high 18 digs while Bria Brimmer had 27 set assists for the Lady Bulldogs in the loss.

Katie Martin and Erika Lightsey put down 12 kills to lead Coastal Carolina.  Martin had six total blocks (4 solo-2 assists) and Lindsay Gill had 10 kills as the Chanticleers improved to 11-18 overall.

SC State will close out a four-game road swing on Sunday (Nov. 6) when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on the Lady Tigers of Savannah State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup.  The Lady Bulldogs will play its final two regular season matches at home next Friday and Sunday, Nov. 11 and Nov. 13 when they host North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T, respectively.
