SC State Falls Florida A&M in MEAC Volleyball Contest

Lady Bulldogs Drops First Conference Match of the Season

Tallahassee, Fla.—The SC State women's volleyball team fell to Florida A&M, 3-0 (17-25, 20-25, 25-27), in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Match-up contested at the Al Lawson Multipurpose Center on the campus of Florida A&M.  The loss is the first in the MEAC for the Lady Bulldogs in 2011.

The match began with the teams exchanging service errors.  Florida A&M then took control of the first set opening up a 7-4 lead and forcing SC State into a timeout.  The Lady Rattlers increased its lead to 13-6 before SC State put together a mini 5-3 run to pull within four, 12-16.  The Lady Rattlers then increased its lead to six at 21-15, before going on to win Set One, 25-17.

SC State and Florida A&M exchanged leads to start Set Two.  The team's battled point-for-point until mid-way thru the set when Florida A&M went on a 3-0 run to take a 17-14 lead and forced SC State into a timeout.  The Lady Rattlers would go on to close the set on 11-6 run to take Set Two, 25-20.

SC State began Set Three slow falling into a 4-1 hole.  The Lady Bulldog fought back over the next few points to tie the score at 5-5.  Florida A&M then used a 3-0 run to pull ahead 8-5.  The Lady Bulldogs remained poised and scored the next two points to pull within one at 8-7.  After exchanging side-outs, Florida A&M once again took control of the set as they increasing its lead once again to three at 14-11.  The Lady Rattlers increased its lead to five, 20-15, before SC State offense picked up its intensity.  The Lady Bulldogs used a 7-3 run to close the gap to one, 23-22. A net violation by Florida A&M allowed SC State to the set at 23-23.  After exchanging side-outs, a kill by the Lady Rattlers Diana Gonzales and a miscue by SC State gave Florida A&M the 27-25 set three win and the 3-0 match victory.

Desire Waller put down a game-high 14 kills with five digs while Shabree Roberson had eight kills and two total blocks (1 solo-1 assist) as the Lady Bulldogs fell to 14-13 overall and 5-1 in the MEAC.  Bria Brimmer put up 37 set assists while Melissa Robinson and Brendell Studnicka had nine and eight digs, respectively in the match.

Florida A&M led by Maria Ceccarelli and Marija Jovanovic with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.  Diana Gonzales had 37 set assists and Karol Marquez had a game-high 17 digs as the Lady Rattlers improved to 7-12 overall and 5-1 in the MEAC.

SC State will remain in the sunshine state as they travel to Daytona Beach to take on the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University on Sunday (Oct. 30).  First Serve is set for 1 p.m. in Moore Gymnasium on the campus of Bethune-Cookman.
