SC State Defeats USC-Upstate, 3-0, in Women’s Volleyball

Lady Bulldogs Wins Fifth Straight

Spartanburg, S.C.—The SC State women's volleyball team wins its fifth straight match as they defeated USC-Upstate, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) in a non-conference matchup at the G. B. Hodge Center on the campus of USC-Upstate.

SC State (14-11) began the game very aggressive, jumping out to a quick 7-3 start in Set One.  USC-Upstate put together a string of points to pull within one at 10-9.  SC State regained control of Set One, using an 8-1 run to increase its lead to seven, 18-11, before going on to win the set 25-16.

The Lady Bulldogs maintained its intensity to start Set Two.  The Lady Bulldogs led the Spartans 15-10 midway through the set.  USC-Upstate used a 5-0 run to pull the game even at 15-15.  The teams battled point-for-point for the remainder of the set before SC State used an 11-6 run to capture Set Two, 25-21.

SC State and USC-Upstate exchanged points to begin the third set with neither team taking more than a two-point lead over the first half of the set.  The teams continued to battle throughout the set, exchanging leads before SC State used a 3-0 run to close the set 25-22 and capture the match, 3-0.

Desire Waller and Shabree Roberson led the attack for SC State with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.  Waller had a solid all-around match as she picked up 11 digs with five service aces and two total blocks.  E. Paige Webb and Tiffané Jackson contributed seven kills each while Bria Brimmer continued to run an effective offense with 32 set assists in the match. 

USC-Upstate, who fell to 7-14 overall, was led by Kayla McAvoy and Mindy Quimby with eight and seven kills, respectively.  Emily Sanders had 12 digs and Morgan Page picked up 11 digs in the loss.

The Lady Bulldogs will have the weekend off before returning home to host Charleston Southern next Tuesday, Oct. 25.  First Serve for next Tuesday's game is set for 6 p.m.  It is also the Breast Cancer Awareness Game where the Lady Bulldogs will be wearing pink accessories in support of the initiative.
