SC State Battles from a Set Down to Defeat Coastal Carolina in Women’s Volleyball

Lady Bulldogs Remain Undefeated at Home at 8-0

Orangeburg, S.C.—The SC State women's volleyball team battled from one set down to defeat Coastal Carolina, 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22), in a non-conference matchup in Dukes Gymnasium.  With the victory the Lady Bulldogs remain undefeated at home at 8-0 and are winners of their last 7-of-10.

After dropping Set One SC State (11-11) displayed tenacity and hustle throughout the remaining three sets.  The Lady Bulldogs hit for just a combined .093 over the first two sets but rebounded nicely hitting a combined .349 over the next two sets. The victory was a total team effort as five players had five or more kills in the contest with three having eight or more digs.

Desire Waller continues to be one of the main attackers for SC State as she put down a game-high 14 kills in the contest.  E. Paige Webb contributed nine kills with 10 digs while Shabree Roberson and Tiffane' Jackson each had six kills in the contest.  Jackson also had an outstanding blocking day as she put down five total blocks, including one solo.  Perhaps the major highlight of the victory was redshirt junior libero Melissa Robinson who recorded a season-high 21 digs in the victory. 

Coastal Carolina (8-13) battled throughout the entire match, but was unable to capitalize on the few errors by SC State, falling in the match, 3-1.  The Chanticleers' had three players to finish the match with double-digit kills led by Erika Lightsey with 11.  Kindra Bailey and Lian Bernett each contributed 10 kills in the match.  Sam Skyrd put up 35 set assists while Lindsay Gill and Lauren Alejo had 15 and 10 digs, respectively in the loss.

SC State will hit the road for a three-game road-swing beginning this Friday, Oct. 14 at North Carolina A&T.  The Lady Bulldogs will then face North Carolina Central (Oct. 16) and USC-Upstate (Oct. 19) before returning home on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when they host Charleston Southern.
