SC State Goes 3-1 in the SC State 2010 Spikefest

Jr., Bria Brimmer was named to the 2010 SC State Spikefest All-Tournament Team
Orangeburg, SC—The South Carolina State women's volleyball team went 3-1, this weekend in the 2010 SC State Spikefest. The tournament, which was held Friday-Saturday, Sept. 17-18, was contested at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus of SC State.
                In its first match of the tournament, SC State (4-11) defeated North Carolina Central, 3-1, (15-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-17). Redshirt sophomore Shabree Roberson led all attackers with 11 kills. Junior Peri Ligons and sophomore E. Paige Webb each recorded nine kills while sophomore Melissa Robinson led the way defensively with nine digs. Junior setter Bria Brimmer, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had a game-high 33 set assists in the victory.
                Belinda Behncke-Biney led North Carolina Central offensively with 10 kills while Raven King and Jzima-Malaki Kalao each picked up seven digs to lead the team defensively.
                SC State picked up its second win of the day as they defeated Hampton, 3-0, (25-20, 25-9, 28-26). Ligons and Webb put down 12 and 10 kills respectively to lead the Lady Bulldogs.   Brimmer put up her second 33 set assists match on the day and Robinson picked up a game-high 15 digs in the victory.
Ornela Cadavid had eight kills while Aaryn Harrison had nine digs for Hampton in the loss.
The Lady Bulldogs opened day two of the tournament with a loss, as they fell to The Citadel, 3-0, (16-25, 22-25, 22-25). Freshman Desire Waller led the team in attacks with nine while Webb picked up double-digit digs with 15. Brimmer continued to run the offense effectively putting up 30 assists in the losing effort.
Blaine McAllister led all attackers in the contest with 10 kills. Jestila Tatum picked up 10 digs in the victory for The Citadel.
                In its final game of the tournament, SC State defeated Mercer, 3-2, (23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19, 15-13). For the second time in the tournament Ligons and Webb recorded double-digit kills, putting down 13 and 10 respectively. The Lady Bulldogs had three players to pick up double-digit digs as Robinson had 17, Webb 13 and Brimmer with 10. Brimmer put up her fourth 30+ assists effort in the tournament with 39.
Mercer was led by Aimee Frutchey with 23 kill. Jamie Duffy had 15 digs in the losing effort.
SC State will return to action, next Tuesday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Clinton, SC to take on the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. The Lady Bulldogs will then travel to Durham, NC next weekend (Sept. 24-25) to participate in the North Carolina Central Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs return back to their home court on Tuesday, Oct. 5 when they host Alabama State.
 
SC State Tournament Notes: Junior Bria Brimmer, who was, named to the All-Tournament Team recorded 30+ assists in all four games. She averaged 33.75 set assists and 1.75 blocks over the weekend…Senior Jarne Gleaton missed the tournament due to injury…The SC State Spikefest was contested in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center which recently underwent some repairs to the volleyball sleeves on the gym floor…
