SC State Volleyball Goes 0-3 at the University of South Carolina Tournament

Roberson tallied 18 kills over the weekend
Orangeburg, SC—The South Carolina State women's volleyball team went 0-3, this weekend at the University of South Carolina Tournament. The tournament, which was held Friday-Saturday, Sept. 10-11, was contested at the Volleyball Competition Center on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
                In its first match of the tournament, SC State (1-10) fell to host University of South Carolina, 0-3, (14-25, 12-25, 8-25). Redshirt sophomore, Shabree Roberson led the offensive attack for the Lady Bulldogs with six kills. Freshman Desire Waller contributed five kills and junior setter Bria Brimmer put up 19 assists in the loss.
Cara Howley put up nine kills to lead the Gamecocks and Taylor Bruns put up a game-high 28 assists in the victory.
            In its second match of the tournament the Lady Bulldogs fell to Lipscomb, 0-3, (11-25, 20-25, 11-25). Elizabeth Webb and Waller led SC State in kills with seven and five respectively. Webb picked nine digs and Bria Brimmer put a game-high 19 assists in the loss.
            Alex Kelly put down a game-high 16 kills and Meghan Hinemeyer had 12 digs in the victory for Lipscomb.         
                In its final match of the tournament, SC State fell to Furman, 1-3, (25-23, 15-25, 9-25, 18-25). The Lady Bulldogs had two players to finish with double-digit kills as Peri Ligons and Roberson put down 10 kills each in the match. Webb, Brimmer and Melissa Robinson led the team defensively with nine digs a piece. Brimmer also had 35 set assists for SC State in the loss.
Furman was led by Chandler Ambrester with 17 kills. The Paladins had three players to record double-digit kills as Alexis Shaffer had 13; Natalie Braun had 10 and Ambrester. Sarah McCarthy put up 37 set assists and Ambrester picked up 12 digs in the win.
                SC State will return to action, next Friday-Saturday, Sept. 17-18, when they host 2010 SC State Spikefest. The Lady Bulldogs will play the opening match of the tournament on Friday at 12 noon versus North Carolina Central. All games of the tournament will be played in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus of SC State.
 
Tournament Notes: Senior Jarne Gleaton suffered an ankle injury in the first match of the tournament. She returned to the match in set three of the tournament but did not play in the final two sets of the tournament.
