SC State Goes 0-2 On Day 2 of the Tiny Laster Invitational

Hampton, VA--The South Carolina State women's volleyball went 0-2 on day two of the Tiny Laster Invitational. The tournament was hosted by Hampton University at Holland Hall on the campus of Hampton University.
            In its first match of the day, SC State could not find much offense as they fell to Bryant, 3-0 (13-25, 23-25, 19-25). The Lady Bulldogs had just one player to record double-digit kills as Paige Webb recorded 10 for the match. Jarne Gleaton and Shabree Roberson contributed eight and seven kills respectively. Defensively, Roberson recorded two-block solos and one block assist while Shaina Ituah put down one block-solo and two block-assists in the match. Setter Bria Brimmer put a game-high 30 set assists in the loss.
            In its final match of the tournament the SC State fell to Wofford, 2-3 (14-25, 25-21, 25-19, 14-25, 8-15). SC State began the match very sluggish dropping Set One, 14-25. The Lady Bulldogs picked up its intensity and energy which allowed them to go on to win the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-19 respectively. Wofford came out very aggressive in Set Four jumping out to a 13-6 lead and never relinquishing it. The Golden Terriers would go on to take Set Four, 14-25 to force a deciding Fifth Set.
            The teams exchanged points to start the Fifth Set before Wofford managed to pull ahead by two, 4-6 and increase its margin to four, 8-4 on the changeover. SC State would not give up fighting to pull within one at 7-8. The Terriers scored the next seven of eight points to take Set Five 15-8 and the match 3-1.
            Gleaton and Peri Ligons each recorded a double-double in the match. Gleaton put down a game-high 19 kills with 14 digs and Ligons added 11 kills with 11 digs for SC State. Brimmer put up 45 set assists while Melissa Robinson picked up a team-high 15 digs in the loss.
            Amanda Liguori and Catelyn Amende led Wofford in kills and digs with 14 and 11 respectively.
            SC State will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 1 when they host USC-Upstate in a non-conference matchup. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus of SC State.
