Washington, DC – Senior forward Brooke Ehinger scored two goals as SC State defeated Howard, 3-0, in a Great West Conference (GWC) matchup in Greene Stadium. The victory is the fifth straight conference shutout for the Lady Bulldogs. With the win SC State captured the East Division of the GWC and will have a number one seed headed into the conference tournament which will be held the first week of November.
Ehinger (Long Beach, CA, Long Beach Community College) scored the first goal of the game from 20 yards out off a deflection by a Howard Player at the 34:43 mark of the first half. After intermission, Ehinger stayed aggressive as she scored the Lady Bulldogs second goal off an assist by Veronica Aguilar (LaCrescenta, CA, LaCrescenta Valley HS) at the 62:55 mark. SC State maintained a two-goal lead for the rest of the half before Olivia Moore (VMI) scored off an assist from Stephanie Searle (Ontario, Canada , Denison HS) with 53 seconds remaining in the game to increase its lead to 3-0 which turned out to be the final score.
“I am very proud of this team,” said head coach Glad Bugariu. “We have worked miracles over the past two seasons and deserve this accomplishment.” The accomplishment Bugariu is referring too is capturing the East Division of the GWC and going into the conference tournament, which will be held the first week of November, with the top seed in the division.
“We were picked to finish last, but we exceeded everyone's expectations,” Bugariu continued. “This is just the first step, we are very capable of being successful in the conference tournament as well.”
SC State will have one regular season game remaining before heading to Houston, Texas for the conference tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will close out its regular season next Sunday, Oct. 31 when they host NJIT. The 1 p.m. contest will also be Senior Day for the team.
