Radford, Va.—The SC State women's volleyball team went 0-2 on the final day of the Radford University Tournament. SC State finished 0-3 in the tournament and fell to 0-7 on the season.
In its first match of the day, SC State fell to Western Carolina, 1-3, (19-25, 21-25, 25-18, 14-25). The Lady Bulldogs had two players to record double-digit kills as freshman Jade Sanford (Dallas, TX/Skyline HS) and red-shirt freshman Melissa Robinson (Tallahassee, FL/Florida HS) put down 11 and 10 kills respectively. Sophomore Peri Ligons (Austin, TX/Connally HS) led the team defensively with seven digs and one block assist. Sophomore Bria Brimmer (Austin, TX/Connally HS) put 34 set assists in the loss.
Carrie Minogue and Amanda Kerr were solid offensively for Western Carolina with nine and eight kills respectively. Katie Hennessey put 35 set assists with 10 defensive digs in the victory.
In its final game of the tournament SC State fell host Radford, 3-0, (18-25, 20-25, 17-25). Robinson continued to play solid for the Lady Bulldogs as she led the way offensively and defensively with seven kills and 12 digs respectively. Ligons also picked up 12 digs in the loss.
Laura Waddell and Desiree Aramburu led Radford in kills and digs with 11 and 10 respectively.
Freshman Jade Sanford (Dallas, TX/Skyline HS) was named to the All-Tournament team after recording 16 kills, one block solo, four block assists and six digs over the weekend.
SC State will return to action next weekend, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 11-12, when they travel to Montgomery, Alabama to participate in the MEAC/SWAC Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will open their home season the weekend of September 18-19 when they host the SC State Spikefest.
