SC State Soccer Team Drops 4-2 Decision to The Citadel

Lady Bulldogs Fought to a 2-2 Tie at the Break

Soccer Update

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State's bid for its first-ever soccer win over The Citadel fell short Tuesday as the visitors pulled out a 4-2 win at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

SC State had its record leveled at 1-1 on the season while The Citadel improved to 2-0 with the victory, which came before a crowd of 262. The visitors broke away from a 2-2 halftime deadlock with two second-half goals for the victory.

Lady Bulldog head coach Glad Bugariu noted the difference in the contest was The Citadel's ability to take advantage of the chances they had.

“They (The Citadel) fought harder,” he said. “You have to give them a lot of credit. Their level of intensity was high and we created some problems for ourselves, especially in the first half.

“They kept up the pressure,” he continued, “and took advantage of their opportunities, and that's soccer.”

The visitors took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Kristene Devine at 42:01 of the first and the first of two goals by Amy Loughran at 15:35 of the period.

The host Lady Bulldogs pulled even, 2-2, at the break on Veronica Aguilar's goal at the 12:22 mark of the opening half and another by Dani Benton with 3:18 on the first-period clock.

The visitors went ahead 3-2 at the 22:44 mark of the second period on a goal by Nikkita Persaud and put the game away when Loughran's second goal of the night – at the 9:36 mark of the period, put them ahead 4-2.

Transfer Brook Ehinger was the leader for the Lady Bulldogs with five shots on goal.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Thursday when they travel to Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC for a 7 p.m. match, the third in less than a week for Bugariu's team.
