SC State Spring Practice Brief

Pough Notes Schedule Changes

Coach Buddy Pough

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State neared the mid-point of its 2009 spring football drills Wednesday with its seventh session, one it which Coach Buddy Pough noted improvement. The Bulldog concentrated on team-style and situational drills during the session which lasted approximately two hours.

“We included more team-style drills and cross-over activities (tonight)” Pough said. “We involved more skills and teaching with the offense going against the defense in certain blocking drills – the receivers against the defensive backs and the running backs against the linebackers in some one-on-one blocking.”

Pough said the staff wanted to make sure that the players developed the skills to execute their blocks properly.

“We went hard,” he continued. “We made a few mistakes but the effort was there. We got a little better than the day before but we must get a lot better to be a good football team.”

SC State also devoted some time to special teams, noted Pough, with emphasis on punting situations, and mixed in some situational drills, including third-down and goal-line execution.

Pough also announced some changes to the Bulldog spring practice schedule. On Friday, the team will hold a light workout in shorts, beginning at 5:30, then return to the field Saturday morning at 9:45.

And, next week, SC State will work out Tuesday and Thursday instead of Monday and Wednesday, as previously scheduled. Those drills get underway at approximately 7:45 p. m.
